NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 10 – Industrialization Principal Secretary Francis Owino has urging Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to adopt policies that will create an enabling environment for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to grow.

Speaking during the launch of ‘Wajibika na KEBs’ program launch he noted that SMEs account for 80 percent of Kenyan workforce compared to the formal sector,” he said.

Kenya Bureau of Standard Managing Director Bernard Njiriani assured to support for SMEs through the verifiaction of their products. “We are putting a lot of emphasis on SMEs to be certified in order for them to penetrate the export market,”he said.

The Principal Secretary sought for reforms and policies that will accommodate the SMEs.”The ministry has a number of key policies in place that can make a real difference, “he said

Speaking during his maiden visit to the KEBS Headquarters, the PS lauded KEBS efforts to tackle trade in substandard and counterfeit products.

The Organization unveiled the plan to enroll Kenyans in the fight against sale of substandard products and services in the market.

“The ‘Wajibika Na KEBS’ programme has comes at a time when the government has prioritized the fight against illicit trade and is keen on eradicating substandard products from the market,” said Owino.

Cultivating a culture of quality, where everybody is accountable for ensuring that quality of products and services is maintained, is key in promoting a vibrant economy and growth in the Country’s Gros Domestic Product,” he added.
