KIGALI, Rwanda, Nov 26 – Local and international tourists will now have a chance to fly to Kigali, Rwanda at a low cost after JamboJet made its inaugural flight to Kigali Monday becoming the first low cost carrier to fly the route.

The airline which expanded its fleet with two new De Havilland Dash 8-400, will be flying once daily from its hub at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, to Kigali International Airport.

Speaking during the inaugural ceremony, Jambojet Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Allan Kilavuka said the airline is taking advantage of the huge opportunity African market has to offer.

“Today we mark a major milestone in our regional expansion strategy. Our aim is to grow our footprint across the continent, while offering a unique product for these markets. We expect that our low-cost model will enable more people to fly affordably, conveniently, and safely,” Kilavuka said.

Kilavuka further stated that they chose to expand to Rwanda because the country has close ties with Kenya, and it is increasingly becoming a vibrant harbor for many Kenyans.

Cabinet Administrative Secretary for Tourism Joseph Boinnet said the move by Jambojet will boost country’s tourism sector for offering affordable flying costs.

“We are proud of our local airline Jambojet for this far it has come, and I am confident that Kenyans, Rwandese and other tourists will be able to travel to Kenya and Rwanda more often and get to experience what the two countries have to offer thus boosting our tourist sectors,” Boinnet said.

Jambojet has been flying to five local destinations including Malindi, Ukunda, Mombasa, Kisumu and one regional destination Entebbe, Uganda.

The airline is also eyeing South Sudan, Mogadishu, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Union of the Comoros and Malawi.

Since inception in 2014, Jambojet, which was awarded the coveted IATA Operational Safety Audit certification (IOSA) in July, has flown over 3million passengers, 30 percent of whom are first time flyers.

The airline was also among the 165 aircraft showcased at the just concluded 2019 Dubai Airshow. It is the only Kenyan operator to ever be showcased at an international airshow.
